A crawler that cleans pen nets while they stay in the water.
Algae and growth block the mesh on pen nets. Water exchange drops, nets get heavy, and cleaning by hand means hours of wading or diving. This concept climbs the net on soft brush drums and is driven from the walkway.

CONCEPT · NOT TO SCALE
Pen nets in Jaffna lagoon farms foul within weeks. Fouled mesh blocks water exchange and adds weight to nets and poles.
Today the work is done by hand from a boat or in the water, panel by panel, in the sun.
We develop each system from problems we see on our own sea cucumber farm in Jaffna.
Sea-pen net cleaner: four steps, in the intended design.
- Step 01
Clip on
The operator places the crawler on a net panel from the walkway. A tether carries power and video.
- Step 02
Hold
A hold-down thruster presses it against the mesh so the tracks can grip.
- Step 03
Brush
Two counter-rotating drums lift growth off the mesh as it moves across the panel.
- Step 04
Check
The front camera shows which panels are clean before moving on.

Each question gets a test and a pass mark agreed with the site owner. Results are published only after the trial.
| Question | How we test it | What “pass” looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Does it damage the net? | Mesh inspection after repeated passes on test panels | No broken knots or abrasion beyond an agreed limit |
| How much net per hour? | Timed runs on fouled panels in a tank, then in a working pen | Faster than hand cleaning with the same crew |
| Does it hold on in current? | Runs at different tides and wind | Stays attached and on line without a diver |
| Can two people handle it? | Launch and recovery trials from the walkway | Safe lift and placement by two operators |
| Does it survive salt water? | Soak and wear tests on seals, motors and bearings | No leaks, and a defined service interval |
